Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2007 Notable University of Scranton Professor, Dr. John McInerney will host a series of lectures about the "Grapes of Wrath", the Dust Bowl, and other topics related to the book and time period in American history. The lectures will be broadcast via Channel 61 at 12:30 AM, 6:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 6:30 PM every Tuesday in October.
 
Friday, October 5, 2007 The Fruits of the Depression, A Times-Tribune Retrospective Photo Exhibition. Starting October 5th and ongoing throughout the month at the Times Building and at the following locations in Scranton: Post Office N Washington Ave, Albright Memorial Library, Moses Taylor Hospital, and in the lobby of the Royal Theatre, University of Scranton prior to the performances of "The Grapes of Wrath." The Exhibition will feature photos published in the Scranton Times from the 1930's. The Great Depression
 
Sunday, October 7, 2007 An American Girl Party: The Great Depression Era. Join us at 2:30pm for some history and dancing from the Great Depression Era! Make a craft and enjoy a snack! Thursday, October 11, 2007 "A Year Down Yonder" Book Discussion at 6:00pm. Learn about a teenage girl's experiences living in the mid-west with her Grandma during the Great Depression. The Elder's Panel, member's of this community who have lived through the Depression, will offer stories and answer questions concerning some of the most trying times of their lives. Located ?. Thursday, October 18, 2007 "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse. Read the story of 14 year old Bill Jo who lived in the Oklahoma dust bowl. Join us at 6:00pm for a lively discussion as we learn of the grim day to day realities of living during the years of constant dust storms through the entries in this free verse journal. Grades 3-6. Saturday, October 20, 2007 Shirley Temple Film Festival. Join us starting at 10:30am for a free family film event! Shirley Temple films are reminiscent of the period of the Grapes of Wrath and give children a glimpse back in time and lots of fun! All ages. Sunday, October 21, 2007 Riding the rails with a hobo. Ranger Bill Clark from Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, recreated the role of a Depression Era Hobo. Children and Families will learn why these men became hobos, who they rode the rails and how they communicated with each other by drawings called hobo signs. Ages 712. Registration is required. Thursday, October 25, 2007 Readings from the "Grapes of Wrath". At 6:00pm teens will enjoy grape juice, cheese and crackers as we share passages from the "Grapes of Wrath" that interested and inspired them. A general discussion about the book and the Depression era will be incorporated into the evening. For grades 7-12. To register call 570-348-3000 ext. 3016
 
Saturday, October 27, 2007 Back in the Day-1930's Film Festival. The Scranton Reads committee will offer a film festival of period movies including Woody Guthrie's "This Machine Kills Fascists" 12:00pm and "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?" at 2:45 in the Community Room of the Lackawanna County Children's Library.
 
Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Scranton Today, Ch. 61 will air winner of 2 Academy Awards, 20th Century Fox's film "The Grapes of Wrath" starring Henry Fonda, Jan Darwell, John Carradine, and Charlie Grapewin.
 
November 2 & 3, 2007 Grapes of Wrath--Theatrical Production at 8:00pm located at the Royal Theatre, McDade Center for Literary and Performing Arts at the University of Scranton. The University of Scranton will perform the "Grapes of Wrath" adapted by Frank Galati and under the direction of Michael O'Steen. A free high school matinee will be offered on November 9, 2007 at 10:00 AM for area schools. Ticket prices are $8 general, $5 faculty, staff, students and seniors.
 
Sunday, November 4, 2007 Scranton Reads Annual Symposium Event at 11:00am located at the University of Scranton. The Annual Symposium, open to the public for a small fee, will be held at the University of Scranton. A panel of area scholars will discuss the themes and implications of the "Grapes of Wrath". Expert panelists include: Dr. Michael O'Steen (University of Scranton), Rabbi Joseph Mendelson (Temple Israel), and others. Audience participation and group discussion makes this event the high point of the community read! Brunch follows the panel discussion and the event concludes with a performance of the "Grapes of Wrath."
